Defenses Collide

Troy Polamalu will showcase some big hits

Green Bay will win Super Bowl XLV.  For the sake of Peter King being wrong, I am going with A-Rod III and the Packers to beat the Steelers on Sunday’s big game.  Let’s say 28-24.

The Sports Minion is a little more excited about this Super Bowl than in recent years.  This game will be much more interesting.  Last year’s match up featured two high profile offenses with remarkable quarterbacks.  This year, there is no lack of talent at quarterback, but nowhere near the explosiveness of a Drew Brees or Peyton Manning.
Instead, the two storied franchises have heavily featured defenses.  Also, each team’s defensive leader is equipped with fantastic long hair.  Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu and his lion’s mane versus Packer linebacker Clay Matthews and his rock star hair.  Last week, Polamalu scrapped by Matthews to be named the AP 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, winning by 2 points, with Polamalu teammate, James Harrison, coming in third.  Harrison won the award in 2008 and Green Bay cornerback won it in 2009.  In short, the last three seasons featured a Packer or Steeler being named as NFL’s top defender.

Look for big games from Polamalu, Harrison, and Lawrence Timmons.  For Green Bay, Woodson, Matthews, and Nick Collins.

It goes without saying that this Sunday’s Super Bowl will feature big hits, hard tackles, and old time smash mouth football.  As long as Green Bay can stop Rashard Mendenhall, this should be a Green Bay victory and their first since Brett Favre led them to a 1997 title.

I agree with the Green Bay pick, especially after hearing Mr. King chose the Steelers.

    Enjoy the game.

Good pick Jed. It was a great game once again for the Super Bowl, much better than the domination games from the 80s and 90s (see SF and ’85 Bears). Let’s hope there will be a Super Bowl actually played next year.
